The engineering team at CustomInk is always looking to learn new things. We've come to realize that the density of the information is not always the most important thing. Rather, exploring a single idea in depth can be a lot of fun.
Avdi Grimm's Ruby Tapas has provided us with a really simple way to execute on this idea.
We started by purchasing a (very affordable) site license so that every engineer could easily access the content. We thought that it would be great to listen to these little nuggets of information on our own time to level up our skills. It was interesting to see how quickly found ourselves wanting to chat about an episode we had recently reviewed, only to find that people had listened to a different episode all together.
Our solution was simple: Start at episode 1 and have a regular "Tapas Talk" after our daily standup to explore the topic. The Tapas Talk is optional, and since each episode is only a few minutes, it's very easy to catch up if you get behind.
We find ourselves regularly gathering around an editor to explore a concept and are often suprised at what we learn.
A happy team is a team that learns together.
